Painting big is one of my greatest loves. Here's a look at my large-scale work — and how to bring a mural to your own wall.
"The Mother" — Kingsessing, Philadelphia
In 2024, I had the honor of helping paint "The Mother," a large-scale mural at 5515 Chester Avenue in the Kingsessing neighborhood of Philadelphia. The mural was designed by Walé Oyéjidé and painted by Efrain Herrera, Kien Nguyen, and me. It remains one of my favorite murals I have ever worked on.
My part in this mural was painting the whole woman, the whole horse, the jacket of the boy and his hands on the top half of the bicycle and some of the geometric shapes, the top of all the background behind the horse and the woman and another ombre triangle and some of the black and white lines.
My part in this mural was painting the woman's face and her hat, the girls full jacket, top half of the girl's face starting at the top of her nose, some fingers, a little bit of the hair and most of the gold design between them.
My part in this mural was painting everything around the portrait, all the lettering, arrows, stars, symbols, the men standing with the sign and in the second panel i worked on some of the lettering and people but most were done by Kien Nguen and the portrait of Ben Fletcher was done by Efrain Herrera.
